YouTube SEO: How to Title, Describe and Tag a Video
A practical checklist for packaging every upload so it can be found in search and suggested videos.

YouTube needs to understand what your video is about, and viewers need a reason to choose it. Titles, thumbnails and descriptions do most of that work. Here's the checklist we use for YouTube video SEO on every upload.
Before you write: check what people search
Type your topic into YouTube's search bar and look at the suggestions. They show phrases people actually use. Then look at the videos already ranking: what angle do they take, and what's missing? This is the core of YouTube keyword research.
Writing the title
- Put the main search phrase near the start, written naturally.
- Say exactly what the viewer will get: a tutorial, a comparison, a story.
- Keep it short enough to read on a phone without being cut off.
- Make a promise the video keeps. Misleading titles hurt watch time and trust.
More detail on this in our page on video title optimisation.
Designing the thumbnail
On a phone, your thumbnail is tiny. Use one clear focal point, strong contrast and only a few words, if any. The thumbnail should add something to the title rather than repeat it. A consistent style also helps returning viewers recognise your channel. See thumbnail optimisation.
Writing the description
- Open with two lines that explain the video and include the main topic naturally; these show before "more".
- Add a short summary of what's covered.
- Add timestamps so viewers can jump to sections. YouTube can turn them into chapters.
- Link to related videos, playlists and your website.
- Finish with a reusable block of social links and contact details.
Tags and hashtags
YouTube has said tags play a minimal role, mainly helping with common misspellings. Add a few relevant ones and move on. A small number of focused hashtags can help too; long lists don't. Our page on tags and hashtags explains the balance.
After publishing
- Upload accurate captions, especially for names and technical terms.
- Add the video to a relevant playlist.
- Set an end screen pointing to the next video viewers should watch.
- Check click-through and retention after a few days, and adjust the title or thumbnail if needed.
