Brand Strategy vs Brand Identity: What's the Difference?

Why the thinking comes before the logo, and how the two work together to build a brand people remember.

Brand Strategy vs Brand Identity: What's the Difference?

"We need a new logo" is one of the most common ways branding projects begin. Often, what the business really needs is clarity about who it's for and why it's different. That's the difference between brand strategy and brand identity.

What brand strategy covers

Brand strategy answers the questions every later decision depends on:

  • Who is your ideal customer, and what do they care about?
  • What makes you genuinely different from the alternatives?
  • What personality should your brand have?
  • What promise does your brand make, and can you keep it?

The heart of it is brand positioning: the clear, ownable place your brand holds in customers' minds.

What brand identity covers

Brand identity design turns that strategy into something people can see and recognise:

  • A logo with versions for every size and surface (logo design)
  • A colour palette and typography system
  • Photography and illustration style
  • Tone of voice and key messages (brand communication)
  • Applications such as social templates, stationery and packaging

Why the order matters

Designing a logo before agreeing on positioning is like choosing an outfit before knowing the occasion. It might look good, but it may not fit. When strategy comes first, design decisions become easier: there's a reason for every colour, typeface and word.

Keeping it consistent

Once both are in place, brand guidelines document how to use them, so your team, printers and partners apply the brand the same way. If your current brand no longer fits where the business is going, rebranding lets you modernise while keeping the recognition you've built.
